COLUMBUS, Ohio –In their second game in a week against a higher ranked conference opponent, No. 23 Ohio State fell to No. 13 Iowa in double overtime, 2-1. Ohio State evened the score with 25 minutes to play in regulation to force the game into extra time. After surviving one overtime period, the Buckeyes held Iowa scoreless for 72 minutes until the Hawkeyes scored the winning goal in the second overtime period. The Buckeyes (6-6) fall to 2-3 in the Big Ten and the Hawkeyes (10-2) improve to 3-1.

QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH JARRED MARTIN

“I am proud of the team. I thought we controlled a majority of the game and had some good team play on both sides of the ball. Our first overtime was really strong, and I thought we had some good chances to put the game away and take the win, but we are still missing that final piece at times.”

“The energy and development of this team throughout this season is admirable, but we need to push it to the next level and stay disciplined throughout. Iowa is a great team and I was happy how we moved the ball and defended as a unit against them.  We will keep at it and learn from this.”

SCORING SUMMARY

The Hawkeyes struck first, scoring on their first penalty corner of the day, twelve minutes into the game. The rest of the half remained scoreless as Iowa took a 1-0 lead into the half. Ten minutes into the second half, Jessica Hourihane scored to tie the game.

Both teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the game. In overtime, the Buckeyes pushed the Hawkeyes on offense. 30 seconds into the first overtime period, Esther Clotet dribbled down field for a scoring opportunity for the Buckeyes, but her shot went wide. On defense, Kelsey Nolan made two diving stops to halt Iowa’s scoring efforts, including one in front of the Ohio State cage. Despite the offensive opportunities and hustle on defense, the Buckeyes were unable to keep the Hawkeyes from scoring. Five minutes into the second overtime period, Iowa capitalized off a loose ball in front of the cage to net the game-winning goal.
