COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 match against USF Friday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 1-4 overall in 2018, while the Bulls improve to 1-4 this season. USF scored the lone goal of the match in the 32nd minute on a header by Tomasz Skublak. USF was issued a red card at halftime and held off a second-half push by the Scarlet and Gray to claim its first win of the year. Ohio State goalkeeper Parker Siegfried made a season-high six saves in the match.

QUOTE FROM COACH
“I think the last three games we’ve created several chances but soccer is a crazy sport sometimes and you just need someone to tuck them away,” head coach Brian Maisonneuve said. “It’s tough because we’ve had so many good looks and we are just coming up short. The last thing we can do is hang our heads. We need to keep working and grinding it out. They will come. It’s a hurdle that we are going to get through and be better for it.”

USF TAKES THE LEAD
The match was scoreless until the 32nd minute when Skublak headed in a cross from eight yards out into the upper left of net for the 1-0 lead. Jonathan Rosales was credited with the assist. Ohio State’s best chance to find a first-half goal came in the 27th minute when Jack Holland fired a low strike from just outside the penalty area but it was saved by the keeper. At half, shots were 10-5 in favor of the Bulls.

RED CARD ISSUED TO BULLS AT HALFTIME
The Bulls were handed a yellow card at the end of the first period, but after further discussion at halftime, the refs changed it to a red card to Tomasz Skublak, forcing USF to play with 10 men the rest of the way and without their goal-scorer.

BUCKEYES GO ON THE ATTACK
Ohio State went on the hunt for the equalizer with the man advantage. Mitch Bergman and Xavier Green each had shots on goal in the 48th and 51st minutes. Jake Scheper collected a loose ball from outside the box in the 61st minute, but his strike sailed just high over the bar.

OPEN NET CHANCE
Ohio State had an open-net chance in the 70th minute, but couldn’t find a goal. Michael Prosuk clanked a free kick off the bar and the rebound went to a group of Ohio State players in front of goal. A sliding header was mishit before a shot by Bergman was jumped on by goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares at 69:44 for his fourth save of the match. He finished with five saves in his first win of the year.
