Study Hopes to Identify Genetic Markers to Predict Response to Antidepressants

A group of research centers spanning five continents is in the middle of a clinical trial intended to identify genetic and other markers that can predict response to three antidepressants. The International Study to Predict Optimized Treatment of Depression, or iSPOT-D, is the largest biomarker discovery effort to identify predictors for depression treatment response. Read more... 

 

Study Finds Genetic Testing Not Leading to Increased Use of Healthcare Services

In spite of increased access to genetic testing, such tests do not drive up use of healthcare, according to a study published recently in Genetics in Medicine. The study looked at 1,599 continuously insured adults between the ages of 25 and 40 and offered them a multiplex genetic susceptibility test for eight common health conditions. Read more...

 AssureRx Health, Inc. announced it has launched a personalized medicine test for the growing number of children and adults diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The new pharmacogenomic test can assist clinicians with important medication decisions that result from genomic differences in how individual patients tolerate ADHD medications. Read more...

Ohio State, Partner Launch 'iTunes Store for Health' Apps  

Ohio State University's Center for Personalized Health Care has teamed with a Cincinnati company for its first for-profit spinoff - which officials envision as an "iTunes store for health" selling diagnostic and wellness tools. The joint venture's first app is software that feeds data from cardiovascular and blood tests into computer algorithms to determine if patients are at risk for, say, heart disease - detecting it years before it develops so prevention can be targeted now. Dr. Clay Marsh is quoted.

 

Promoting Patient Engagement in Meaningful Use 

The proposed rule for Stage 2 Meaningful Use has a strong emphasis on patient engagement. As the online petition urging the ONC even further strengthen these requirements says, "Nothing would result in improving the health of the population (and decrease healthcare costs) more than having greater involvement/engagement by individuals in the healthcare process."
