The Ohio State men’s basketball team visited Toledo Friday but not the familiar city to those back in Ohio. This city is more than 4,000 miles from and is pronounced a bit differently than its northern Ohio counterpart of the same name.

Once a fortified lookout post in Spain about an hour south of Madrid, Toledo now serves as an historical landmark and attraction with about 7,000 residents.

The Buckeyes were served breakfast in the hotel before departing for the tour by bus Friday morning. The team stopped just outside the only entrance to the city to view it from afar and to visit a site where raw steel is forged into swords, knives and other handmade crafts.

An escalator, a welcomed modern addition for the many tourists visiting the city, took the Buckeyes up to the base of Toledo’s narrow cobblestoned streets and alleyways.

The team took a guided tour through stone residences, shops and restaurants, built into the landscape centuries ago. Following a tour of a cathedral that took more than 250 years to construct, the team had free time to explore the city and find lunch.

The rest of the afternoon and evening are free for all to shop and explore Madrid before the first game of the trip is played Saturday.

Aug. 2

The Buckeyes arrived in Madrid just after the sun Thursday after an overnight flight. The team and travel party boarded a bus for a quick tour of the city before checking into the hotel in the early afternoon. Stops during the morning tour included a visit to Las Ventas, the second largest bull fighting arena in the world, where our tour guide Ernesto provided a walking tour of the exterior of the 22,000 seat venue.

The Buckeyes then stopped for a walk through a centuries-old garden before a break for lunch at a former train station turned modern shopping mall.

After an afternoon break, the travel party will take part in a welcome dinner in the early evening.
