AEDE at the 2013 Farm Science Review

The 2013 Farm Science Review will be held from September 17-19, 2013 at Ohio State’s 2,100 acre Molly Caren Agricultural Center, which is located two miles north of London, Ohio on US Route 40.

Sponsored by Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), the Farm Science Review features educational workshops, presentations and demonstrations delivered by experts from CFAES, OSU Extension and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, which are the outreach and research arms, respectively, of the College. The three day event attracts more than 130,000 participants from all over the U.S. and Canada who come to learn the latest in agricultural production and view nearly 4,000 product lines from 600 commercial exhibitors.

Pre-show tickets are $7 at all OSU Extension county offices. Tickets can also be purchased in advance on the Farm Science Review website. Tickets are $10 at the gate. Children 5 and younger are admitted free. Farm Science Review hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 17-18 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 19.

Water Quality Panel Discussion

AEDE’s Dr. Brent Sohngen, environmental economics professor and leader of Ohio State’s Environmental Policy Initiative, Dr. Elena Irwin, environmental and regional economics professor, and Barry Ward, assistant professor and leader for OSU Extension’s programming in production business management will headline a panel discussion at this year’s Farm Science Review: “Water Quality: State and National Concerns and Consequences”. The discussion will focus on the impact of agricultural production practices on Ohio’s water resources. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Matthew Roberts, associate professor of agricultural economics.

The panel discussion will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Tobin Building. Learn more here.

Question the Authorities

Ohio State experts will field questions from Farm Science Review participants at "Question the Authorities" sessions held continuously over the three day event. The sessions, which typically draw anywhere from a handful of participants to some 60 people, are a good opportunity for participants to ask questions ranging from general inquiries to specific scenarios. The "Question the Authorities" sessions are held in the center of the main Farm Science Review exhibit area.

Undergraduate Program Booth

The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences showcases its 19 majors to prospective students through its display in the Bailey Building at the Farm Science Review. Representatives from AEDE will be present to staff the department’s booth, which will highlight the Agribusiness and Applied Economics major and the Environment, Economy, Development and Sustainability (EEDS) major.  

Ohio State Agribusiness Club Fundraiser

The Ohio State Agribusiness Club will hold its largest fundraising project of the year by organizing concession stands at the Farm Science Review. The three stands will sell Coke products, water, chips, candy, donuts, and other refreshments, and will be located near the West entrance, as well as at one of the field demonstration locations. The stands will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 a.m. daily and will be manned by Ohio State undergraduate students who are Agribusiness Club members.

Farm Business Office

AEDE faculty will help to staff the Farm Business Office at the Farm Science Review, which is located in the Francine Firebaugh Building. The Farm Business Office offers participants the opportunity to interact one-on-one with Ohio State University Extension farm management specialists, OSU agricultural economists, and OSU Extension educators. Participants can seek advice on various farm business and management topics including budgeting, cash rents, flexible cash rent arrangements, land purchase issues, input buying, farm transition planning, estate planning, retirement planning, farm recordkeeping and analysis, tax management, human resources management, risk management issues and more.
