Ohio State determines the amount of financial aid you're eligible for by estimating the cost of attendance for the average student, then subtracting your Expected Family Contribution, taken from your FAFSA.
Cost of Attendance - Expected Family Contribution = Financial Need
Cost of Attendance (COA)
To determine your aid eligibility, we start by estimating how much attending Ohio State will cost in a given year. We take estimated direct costs (tuition and other university fees) and add them to estimated indirect costs (living expenses (housing and food), books, supplies and equipment, transportation, federal student loan fees and other personal expenses). The result is a standard academic year's Cost of Attendance for a full-time student. Your actual expenses may be more or less than the average estimates used.
Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
The Expected Family Contribution is determined by the federal government from the information you provide on the FAFSA.
Financial Need
The Expected Family Contribution is subtracted from the Cost of Attendance to establish your financial need, which determines how much need-based aid you are eligible for each academic year.
