This option is for students that cannot secure a traditional internship or work experience but would like to apply to learn from an industry partner and is willing to commit coordinating hours  with industry professional and complete assigned course work.

Student Requirements:
45 hours shadowing experience with an assigned industry professional and assignments through Canvas.

REQUIREMENTS OF BEING A STUDENT MENTEE

Our goal is to provide work with industry partners to provide a meaningful learning opportunity to students, who we believe are an investment in the future of our hospitality industry.  For those that would like to participate as a mentee, we ask the following:

 

  • Meet with mentor for introductions and to outline the learning objectives for the Summer Mentor Experience and work with industry mentor to complete a Student Learning Agreement
  • Work with mentor to ensure student gains exposure and experience that will provide them the opportunity to thoughtfully reflect upon and complete coursework.
  • Monitor progress towards goals and provide feedback, questions or concerns to mentor throughout Mentor Experience to ensure goals are accomplished and expectations are being met
  • Follow up on agreed upon dates of calls, meetings, etc. as outlined by mentor
  • Complete assignments outlined on syllabus by stated deadlines
  • Complete required hours, as outlined by course instructor

Industry Professionals

“THE ASK” OF THE MENTOR

Our goal is to provide a meaningful learning opportunity to students, who we believe are an investment in the future of our hospitality industry.  For those that would like to serve as a mentor, we ask the following:

 

  • Meet with student for introductions and to outline the learning objectives, otherwise known as SMART Goals, for the Summer Mentor Experience and work with student to complete a Student Learning Agreement
  • Work with student to establish a “Contribution Project”, which would allow the student an opportunity to build upon their learning while actively contributing to the organization
  • student)
  • Invest time at the beginning and end of each week (could simply be ½ hour each segment) to ensure the student is prepared for and understands what has occurred and expectations of their role (i.e. – are they to listen and take notes, provide a recap, etc.).
  • Provide feedback to student throughout Mentor Experience to ensure goals are accomplished and expectations are being met
  • Write a recommendation for the future or share feedback why you would not recommend in the future (we will have student awards available through Big Dish Funds for students that successfully complete this experience)
